Ha Noi (VNA) - Ho Chi Minh City has about 500,000 member Hoa (Chinese) ethnic community - the largest Hoa group living in Viet Nam. They live mainly in the city's precincts 5, 6 and 1.

The Hoa community has markedly contributed to the city's economic growth, and helped create jobs for thousands of local workers. According to the latest statistics by HCM City Board for Hoa People Affairs, this ethnic group runs 30 percent of the city's businesses.

Several Hoa members have established trademarks with well-earned reputations spreading in the domestic market and overseas. These include Biti's footwear company, Sacombank, and Thuan Kieu Plaza.

The businesses established by the Hoa people are known for their rapidly changing products and their diversified traded goods resulting in a high degree of customer needs responsiveness.

One of the renowned Hoa member in the city is Dang Hong Anh, General Director of the Saigon Commercial Real Estate Company (Sacomreal). Sacomreal has provided customers with many services, particularly in real estate investment, helping boost the real estate market in the city.

Hoa are famous for their close knit community ties. They help each other in doing business. Restaurants and cafes owned by Hoa are places for Hoa people to meet and exchanges information and experiences in running businesses.

This community arrived in Viet Nam at different points of time. Many came between late 17th century and early 20th century. They have become an important part of the Vietnamese nation, while still preserving their traditional cultural identity, thus contributing to the cultural diversity of Viet Nam's multi-ethnic society.

As for their traditional festivals, in addition to Tet Nguyen Dan (New Year Festival), Tet Thanh Minh (Grave Visiting Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 3rd lunar month) and Tet Doan Ngo (Double Five Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month), Hoa people also celebrate Tet Nguyen Tieu on the 15th of the first lunar month and organise a night festival with flower garlands and coloured lanterns (Hoi Hoa Dang) on the same day.

This year, the Ministry of Culture and Information and Ho Chi Minh City will join the Hoa community in celebrating Tet Nguyen Tieu and Hoi Hoa Dang at the April 30 Park from Feb. 28-March 4. Many cultural activities will be held on this occasion to highlight the Hoa's unique cultural features, such as a fashion show, calligraphy exhibiting and folk painting in addition to various gastronomic experience. The festival will also introduce the Hoa people's contributions to Viet Nam's revolutionary struggle.
